in class: seat assignment

girls in the hfac

the girls they sit beneath the stairs

i sit across

i watch, i stare

they seem enthralled by their own things

one, she scrolls

the other reads

their mouths they move in a different way

one smiles softly

the other eats edamame

one girl packs up and then she's gone

leaving one girl alone

to sit and hum

her feet they clatter up the stairs

the other sits

so unaware

we sit here alone, the girl and me

when out of nowhere

a boy starts talking

i look around and to my surprise

it's my classmate Alex

under the stairs he hides

the girl seems unphased while i am intrigued

i hear Alex say "zombie apocalypse"

what could this mean?

the girl sitting across, she really doesn't care

she sits tapping her phone

with sleek long black hair

in a world of her own, confined to her sphere

what does she see?

what does she hear?

this is us for most of our lives

we sit unsuspecting

we don't try to hide

every once in awhile it might just be so

a stranger might watch us

but probably not though

the girl(s) will never know the poem I wrote

the way that i watched them

for we never even spoke
